UK Government Proposes New Rules to Tackle Ransomware and Protect Key Services

The UK government has announced plans to strengthen its defences against ransomware attacks through a series of new measures following public consultation. These include banning public sector organisations/critical national infrastructure such as schools, local government authorities and NHS from paying ransoms, and requiring other organisations to inform the government before making any payment. Mandatory reporting of ransomware incidents is being developed, helping build intelligence, improve responses and aid in hunting down threat actors. The proposals aim to disrupt criminal operations, reduce financial incentives for malicious actors and increase transparency across sectors.

Now, more than ever, strengthening resilience and enhancing defences against these threats is essential. Intertek can help support organisations with a comprehensive range of cyber assurance services, ranging from cyber essentials assessments and phishing campaigns up to ransomware resilience, dark web scanning and AI red teaming and governance support - Ransomware Resilience Testing

The new package of measures will lead the way in tackling ransomware and are designed to strike against cyber criminals’ business model, bolstering our national security and protecting key services and businesses from disruption delivering on our Plan for Change.
