The UK Government is prioritising the cybersecurity sector as a key area for economic growth, forming part of its wider Plan for Change. The industry, which now supports over 67,000 jobs and generates more than £13 billion annually, will undergo an independent growth review led by experts. This review, expected by the end of summer, will focus on the strengths of the sector and provide a roadmap for its future growth to boost jobs and innovation. As part of this the Government Cyber Advisory Board has been reformed with a new group of senior cybersecurity experts/leaders from a range of organisations, tasked with providing guidance on strengthening the public sector's cybersecurity against emerging threats.
Up to £16 million in new funding will be allocated to two programmes within the cyber sector. This includes £10 million over four years for the CyberASAP initiative, aimed at supporting the academic cyber community in turning research into commercial businesses, and up to £6 million allocated to supporting cyber start-ups and SMEs as part of the governments accelerator Cyber Runway.
