India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs has officially extended the enforcement date of the Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024 to September 1, 2026. This update gives manufacturers and importers more time to prepare for one of the most significant regulatory shifts in the Indian industrial market.
What’s Changing?
Once enforced, the regulation will require all covered machinery and electrical equipment to be certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Without BIS certification, these products cannot be manufactured, imported, or sold in India.
This extension provides a critical opportunity to:
- Complete the BIS certification process
- Align product designs and documentation with Indian safety standards
- Mitigate supply chain risks before the regulation takes effect
Note: Enforcement dates for assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components will be announced separately.
