In a recent interview with Sustainability Magazine, Ferrero UK and Chester Zoo explored how sustainable palm oil can shift from being a climate concern to a conservation solution.
Palm oil isn’t inherently bad, but when produced unsustainably, it drives deforestation and habitat loss. That’s why Ferrero is committed to sourcing RSPO-certified, segregated palm oil that’s fully traceable to individual plantations. The company uses satellite monitoring tools to ensure transparency and accountability from plantation to product.
Chester Zoo is tackling this on multiple fronts. Its Sustainable Palm Oil Communities initiative made Chester the world’s first Sustainable Palm Oil City, and now aims to guide other towns toward certification. The zoo also delivers national education programs, reaching tens of thousands of children through virtual lessons, to raise awareness of sustainable sourcing and conservation.
What’s especially noteworthy is the environmental advantage of responsibly grown palm oil. It's highly efficient, yielding up to ten times more per hectare than alternative oils, which helps preserve forests and protect biodiversity when managed correctly.
