ISCC News: Positive Technical Assessment by the European Commission for ISCC EU RFNBO Certification Approach

This is what everyone was expecting in the renewable’s energy world.

Update from the ISCC System Update - 17 September 2024 Newsletter:

The ISCC announced in their newsletter today, that their ISCC EU Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) and Recycled Carbon Fuels (RCFs) certification approach has been positively assessed by the European Commission (EC). Please take a look at the official assessment note:  https://energy.ec.europa.eu/topics/renewable-energy/bioenergy/voluntary-schemes_en

ISCC mentioned that, as a next step, the EC will start the official recognition process and aims for completion by the end of this year. Once the official recognition is in place, ISCC EU RFNBOs and RCFs certification will be applicable.

Why this recognition is so important? , according to the European Commission:

Voluntary schemes and national certification schemes of EU countries help to ensure that biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels as well as renewable hydrogen and its derivatives (renewable fuels of non-biological origin or RFNBOs), and recycled carbon fuels (RCF) are sustainably produced by verifying that they comply with the EU sustainability criteria, as well as the relevant methodologies for RFNBOs and RCF.

Schemes, like ISCC ensure that:

  • The production of feedstock for biofuels, bioliquids, and biomass fuels does not occur on land with high biodiversity, and land with significant carbon content has not been converted for this production.
  • The electricity used in producing renewable hydrogen is sourced from renewable origins.
  • The production of renewable fuels and gases results in adequate greenhouse gas emissions savings.

Many schemes also consider additional sustainability factors, including soil, water, and air protection, as well as social criteria. During the certification process, an external auditor verifies the entire production chain, from the origin of the raw materials and energy to the fuel producer or trader.

Although these schemes are operated privately, the European Commission can recognize them as being in compliance with the rules outlined in the Renewable Energy Directive.
