Council of Europe opens first ever global treaty on AI for signature

The global treaty on Artificial Intelligence is a significant step forward for responsible AI management, encouraging ethical practices while fostering international collaboration. Over the past few years, the leaps and bounds forward for AI technology have led industry leaders, governments, and consumers into new and sometimes uncertain territory. This treaty tackles critical AI issues that pose risks, such as human rights, transparency, and accountability.

As AI is developed and integrated into society at quicker pace, guidelines and direction are helpful to mitigate potential issues. These actions taken by leaders help create a better path forward to develop AI advancements with people and responsibility in focus. With the ISO 42001 AI management systems standard published in 2023 and the AI treaty signed in 2024, Artificial Intelligence appears to be a main focus for further development for years to come.

The treaty provides a legal framework covering the entire lifecycle of AI systems. It promotes AI progress and innovation, while managing the risks it may pose to human rights, democracy and the rule of law. To stand the test of time, it is technology-neutral.
