The plant based foods booming business

Plant-based foods are a booming business. Food manufacturers from startups to leading companies are innovating rapidly in this category. As examples, Givaudan and Bühler are joining forces in a partnership to build a new innovation centre in Singapore. "According to recent independent consumer market research, the plant-based food market is growing at more than 10 per cent year-on-year. The pandemic and the resulting negative association with animal-based food is projected to further boost the market in the next five to 10 years."

This growing business with "ultra-processed" foods raises however new questions for food safety experts. Food safety standards must be amended to also include these new meatless options.

Specific industry solutions will be needed to develop and launch safe and quality food products onto the market in the most efficient way and with minimal risk.
