Debate rages over push for new green revolution in Africa's agriculture

The agricultural situation in Africa is challenging and requires urgent attention.

Years of mono-cropping and overgrazing have resulted in about 65% of farmland becoming degraded or less productive, affecting more than 270 million people who now face chronic hunger.

The conversation around potential solutions varies, with some advocating for more fertilizers, others exploring bio-stimulants to reduce fertilizer use, and many looking towards regenerative farming practices.

However, financing the restoration of Africa’s soils remains difficult. Only 4% of global climate finance is directed towards agriculture, and just 1% reaches smallholder farmers.

Timely action is needed, with careful monitoring of progress to ensure positive outcomes.
