How papaya growers are prioritizing food safety

Efforts to enhance the safety and quality of Mexican-grown papayas are gaining momentum through collaboration. In response to a 2019 salmonella outbreak linked to Mexican papayas, the Texas International Produce Association and ProExport Papaya partnered, engaging Jennifer McEntire, senior vice president of IFPA, to devise a comprehensive strategy. This initiative resulted in the "Food Safety Best Practices Guide for the Growing & Handling of Mexican Papayas" and the establishment of a Foreign Supplier Verification Program for papaya importers. Additional safety measures include a self-audit verification tool and a root-cause analysis protocol.

Learn the basics of root cause analysis and how they can help your organization with Intertek's Root Cause Analysis webinar.
