Recently Nike was asked by the IndustriALL global trade union in Cambodia to support them in reinstating eights employees which had been fired being trade union officials.
The company involved had sacked the employees in February, the local and national unions tried to negotiate a re-hiring, unfortunately without success.
Nike, being a client of the factory, was then contacted and asked to support and convince the factory. It took two months of negotiation, then the employees were reinstated,
This might seem as a very small step towards general human rights. Again it might also be seen symbolically having a global player, such as Nike, getting involved in this kind of issues. Definitely Nike will have to show further positive ongoing actions regarding human rights and not use this incident as greenwashing.
