Where is it? - modern slavery

It could be confusing to call it 'modern' that mankind found something new. The reality, like many other things, that is not the case. So what is Slavery?

When one cannot refuse or leave the situation because of threats, violence, deception, abuse of power or other possible forms of coercion = slavery.

According to a recent report by ILO, two principal components of slavery are forced labour and forced marriage.

First, forced labour:

  • Private actors impose 86% of forced labour cases. It touches virtually all parts of the economy - Services (excluding domestic work), manufacturing, construction, agriculture and domestic work.
  • 3.3 million children, 12%, and the figure is likely the tip of the iceberg. While over half are involved in commercial sexual exploitation and domestic work, the agriculture and manufacturing economic sectors and industries have a share.

Second, forced marriage:

  • Estimated 22 million people at any given time - 2.8 per thousand people.
  • Every region in the world; is closer to home than we want to believe: 10.4% of Europe and Central Asia. 26% in higher or upper-middle-income countries

Step up the ESG commitments - lead with responsibility and accountability to end Slavery or Modern Slavery: # UN Sustainability Development Goal SDGs - 8 DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH. There are ten targets within this specific goal 8, and sharing 8.7 about the subject.

8.7 Take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms.

I would love to connect with the private sector to understand the outcome that matters to demonstrate the UNSDG goals and not end up with the obsession of the due diligence process for risk without real outcomes for people.

Modern slavery occurs in almost every country in the world, and cuts across ethnic, cultural and religious lines. More than half (52 per cent) of all forced labour and a quarter of all forced marriages can be found in upper-middle income or high-income countries.
