Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Why I am not sending my kids back to school

This is the hardest decision most parents are going to face as we all get ready for the fall and back to school season.  What are your plans and what steps can you take to help keep your kids safe at school during the Covid-19 pandemic?

There is no right answer as we navigate through this uncharted territory, but there are some things we can do to make schools as safe as possible for students and faculty who will be back in the classroom in the coming days and weeks. First, we can follow all CDC and WHO guidelines for social distancing and mask-wearing, but also by implementing strict Prevention of Spread of Infection (POSI) guidelines for how hygiene and cleaning methods will be followed.

My girls want to go back to school, and they are placing enormous pressure on us parents to make it so. They miss their friends, the social structure and the immersion in humanity that kids need and crave at this age. Virtual learning has played an important role for them, but it is not a substitute for in-person learning, especially for younger kids. As things stand now, my children are scheduled to start school next week.
