Two-day Amazon summit to focus on climate change and human rights

On August 8th and 9th eight South American countries as well as various other invited countries, such as e.g. France, Norway and Germany are meeting in Belém the capital of the Amazon state of Pará to discuss and hopefully agree on real measures to stop deforestation in the Amazonas before the tipping point is reached.

Although the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation is 28 years old, they are meeting for the first time again since 2009, which shows whose interests have been prevailing the last years.

UPDATE on August 10th: Personal opinion: This meeting looks like an opportunity lost, lots of talk but no commitment or specific action!

Lula insists responsibility for saving the Amazon extends worldwide. "The world needs to help us preserve and develop the Amazon," he said Wednesday. "Investing is cheap if it's a matter of saving the rainforest."
