Australian Human Rights Act "in development"

Although the Australian Human Rights Act has been introduced already in 1986 and been further aligned on regional base in various Australian provinces, Australia is presumably the only liberal democracy in the world that does not have a national act or charter of rights that explains what people’s basic rights are and how they can be protected (https://humanrights.gov.au/human-rights-act-for-australia).

Therefore there are ongoing activities by the Australian Human Rights Institute and the Australian Human Rights Commission to enhance or expand various rights to culture and cultural heritage as well as the right to a healthy environment.

The Institute notes that while the right to culture and cultural heritage and the right to a healthy environment are to some extent included in the AHRC proposal, our submission suggests that these be expanded. The Institute notes that there is no specific reference to the human rights of older persons in the AHRC model.
